Headaches and Migraines: Causes and Relief

Writer's picture: Sara Becker, PT, DPTSara Becker, PT, DPT

Headaches and migraines are among the most common health complaints, affecting millions of people worldwide. They can range from minor annoyances to debilitating episodes that disrupt daily life. Understanding the causes and identifying effective relief methods can be a game-changer for those who experience these conditions.

Common Causes of Headaches and Migraines

Low back pain symptoms can vary widely depending on the underlying cause. Common symptoms include:

1. Stress and Tension

  • Stress headaches, also known as tension headaches, are the most prevalent type of headache. They often feel like a band of pressure around the head and can be triggered by work-related stress, emotional strain, or poor posture.

2. Underlying Health Issues

  • High Blood Pressure: Persistent headaches can signal uncontrolled hypertension, which requires immediate attention.

  • Hypothyroidism: An underactive thyroid can lead to headaches coupled with joint pain and fatigue.

  • UTIs: Infections like urinary tract infections can sometimes cause headaches alongside other systemic symptoms.

  • Concussion-Related Headaches: Read more on my blog here

3. Hormonal Changes

  • Perimenopause: Women going through hormonal fluctuations may experience headaches that come and go or last for days.

  • Other Hormonal Triggers: Migraines are often linked to hormonal imbalances, particularly during menstrual cycles.

4. Sleep Issues

  • Headaches While Sleeping: Poor sleeping posture, grinding teeth, or sleep apnea can lead to headaches at night.

  • Morning Headaches: Waking up with headaches every morning might indicate dehydration, insufficient sleep, or other underlying problems.

5. Muscle Compensations

  • A headache and migraine can be overcompensating for weakness in your core, neck, eyes, back or pelvic floor OR it could be due to an overly zealous muscle in another area causing other muscles to not fire as properly. A Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) practitioner will be able to assess this

  • Neck Pain Headaches are common, read more about it on my blog here

5. Other Contributing Factors

  • Diet: Certain foods and drinks, such as caffeine or processed foods, can be triggers.

  • Dehydration: Lack of water intake is a common cause of headaches.

  • Neurological Issues: Headaches coupled with nausea, dizziness, or other neurological symptoms warrant further investigation.

Understanding Headache Locations

The location of a headache can provide clues about its cause:

  • Forehead: Often associated with tension or sinus issues.

  • Temples: Linked to stress or grinding teeth.

  • Back of the Head/Neck: May signal posture-related tension or high blood pressure.

Relief and Remedies for Headaches and Migraines

Please note these are general guides to discuss with a clinician familiar with your care.

1. Immediate Relief Techniques

  • Cold Compress: Applying a cold pack to the forehead can numb the pain. I love Thermipaq which can be used as a cold pack or heating pad or purchase a cold massager to roll over the symptomatic area

  • Heat Therapy: A warm compress on the neck or shoulders can help relieve tension headaches. My favorite brands for moist heating pads are Thermophore and Thermipaq.

  • Hydration: Drinking water can alleviate dehydration-related headaches. Most people are deficient in minerals, especially Magnesium. Check out my Magnesium blog for my favorite electrolytes

2. Lifestyle Adjustments

  • Regular Sleep Patterns: Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule reduces the risk of headaches at night or in the morning.

  • Stress Management: Practices like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can lower stress levels. More tips are on my stress blog here

  • Balanced Diet: Avoid trigger foods and include magnesium-rich options like leafy greens.

3. Alternative Therapies

  • Acupressure: Targeting specific pressure points to relieve headache symptoms. At Releaseology, I use a device that uses microcurrent to stimulate these acupressure points and will reach you which ones you can stimulate on your own

  • Manual Therapy:  Hands-on techniques, such as myofascial release, can relieve tension and improve neck, skull, jaw mobility and more.

  • Dry Needling - although not super pleasant, the insertion of the needle helps to break up tight tissue and signal healing factors

  • Muscle Activations are the premise of Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) treatment. See an NKT specialist in your area to assess which muscles need to be activated. If a muscle is not working at it's best, other muscles MUST compensate. However, as miraculous as the brain is, it doesn't know that it is causing undue pain.

  • Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Headaches and Migraines often involves an overactive nervous system that is constantly living in fight-or-flight. Calming the nervous system can reduce symptom intensity and promote healing. Society today is terrible to our nervous systems and the vagus nerve. It was not programmed to handle the frequency and intensity of the stressors of today’s world. Improving vagus nerve dysfunction teaches your system to be flexible when faced with a stressor or “trigger” and how to accurately “read” them and respond appropriately. I have many free resources for vagus nerve activation on my site at www.releaseology.com/vagus plus book with me with my services below. I ALWAYS recommend the NKT Vagus Nerve Combo to assess where the pain is coming from and then relieve you, but if you want full vagus nerve time, book the Vagus Nerve Harmony Massage. If you don't live locally, I also offer vagus nerve services virtually.
