Sciatica—the mere mention of it can send a shiver down your spine (literally). For those who’ve experienced the shooting pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates from the lower back through the hips and down one leg, it’s more than a minor inconvenience. Sciatica can be debilitating, affecting every aspect of daily life, from sitting comfortably to performing basic tasks. But when it comes to finding relief, a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn’t work. That’s where Releaseology’s one-on-one assessment and services come in.

Sciatica Symptoms and Flare Up
Although it can vary, common sciatica symptoms and signs of a flare up can include:
Radiating Pain: Sharp, shooting pain that travels from the lower back down through the leg.
Numbness or Tingling: A pins-and-needles sensation, often felt in the leg or foot.
Weakness: Difficulty moving or controlling the affected leg or foot.
Worsening with Movement: Pain often intensifies with activities like sitting, standing, or bending.
Localized Pain: Discomfort may be confined to the lower back or buttocks.
Possible Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica is caused by a structure that is pinching on the sciatic nerve. However, due it's gain in popularity, sometimes sciatica, leg pain and back pain are commonly misdiagnosed as sciatica. Regardless, the causes of sciatica can be the following:
Herniated Disc: A bulging or ruptured disc pressing on the sciatic nerve.
Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerve roots.
Piriformis Syndrome: Tightness or spasms in the piriformis muscle irritating the sciatic nerve.
Spondylolisthesis: Misalignment of vertebrae causing nerve impingement.
Injuries or Trauma: Accidents or falls that impact the lower spine.
Possible Ways for Sciatica Symptoms Relief in Tempe and Home
Please note that due to sciatica's complexity and people's own anatomical differences the below activities may provide you pain relief or increase your sciatica flare up. These are general guides to discuss with a clinician familiar with your care.
Targeted Stretching and Mobility Exercises: Specific stretches like the piriformis stretch or hamstring stretch can help relieve tension on the sciatic nerve, but note this can also worsen your symptoms
Aquatic Therapy: Exercises and stretches in the buoyancy of water reduces pressure on joints, making it possible to move freely while building strength. You can find benefit in either cold or warm water. The warm water or a jacuzzi will help to decrease tight muscles to relieve the sciatic nerve, whereas cold plunging or just cold water will help to numb the area to decrease pain.
Heat Therapy: Applying heat to sore areas is one of the simplest and most effective ways to ease muscle tension and stiffness. Heat increases blood flow, relaxes muscles, and reduces pain signals. Apply a moist heating pad for 15–20 minutes. Avoid excessive heat to prevent burns. NOTE that moist heating pads are the most effective. My favorite brands are Thermophore and Thermipaq
Please Note: Some links on my site are affiliate links, which means that I collect a small portion of your sale, at no extra cost to you. This helps with the cost of running a website, providing services, etc.
Cold Therapy: Can help to decrease the inflammation as well as numb the area. Thermipaq has a a great cold pack that stays cold or purchase a cold massager to roll over the symptomatic area
Topical Magnesium: our muscles use magnesium to contract and relax so using it topically can decrease muscle tightness (without upsetting your stomach). My favorite is Trace Minerals products, their Magnesium Lotion has been out of stock recently, as I think they're switching to this spray. You can get 20% off with my Fullscript link, you just need to sign-up for an account but can continue to use this indefinitely
CBD can work on both nervous system level and physical level of pain, making it super effective.
Arnica is anti-inflammatory and a fantastic use for pain, strains, sprains, bruising , carpel tunnel and swelling. You can use my Fullscripts link here as well for a discount on arnica
St. John's Wort can be used for nerve pain
Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Chronic pain often involves an overactive nervous system that is constantly living in fight-or-flight. Calming the nervous system can reduce pain intensity and promote healing. Society today is terrible to our nervous systems and the vagus nerve. It was not programmed to handle the frequency and intensity of the stressors of today’s world. Improving vagus nerve dysfunction teaches your system to be flexible when faced with a stressor or “trigger” and how to accurately “read” them and respond appropriately. I have many free resources for vagus nerve activation on my site at www.releaseology.com/vagus plus book with me with my services below. I ALWAYS recommend the NKT Vagus Nerve Combo to assess where the pain is coming from and then relieve you, but if you want full vagus nerve time, book the Vagus Nerve Harmony Massage. If you don't live locally, I also offer vagus nerve services virtually.
The Complexity of Sciatica
Sciatica isn’t a condition in itself but a symptom of an underlying issue—often a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or piriformis syndrome. Each case of sciatica has its own unique root cause, which is why blanket modalities or generic treatment plans often fall short. What works for one person may do nothing for another or, worse, exacerbate the pain.
This is where Releaseology stands apart. My philosophy is rooted in the belief that true healing comes from addressing the individual, not just the symptom. And regardless of your struggles with getting a true sciatica diagnosis by a healthcare professional, I don't need the diagnosis to treat you successfully.
By combining advanced techniques like neurokinetic therapy (NKT), dry needling, cupping, and myofascial release, I tailor each treatment plan to the specific needs of the client. I never charge anything extra for any of my techniques, so whatever I feel will work best for your individual condition will be applied. Book your sciatica symptom relief in Tempe today. Plus, I am very honest with my limits, if your pain is coming from somewhere out of my realm, I've built quite a network of practitioners that I can refer you to.
